Inauguration of Harding University president set for Friday

Dr. Bruce D. McLarty will be inaugurated as the fifth president of Harding University Friday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. in Benson Auditorium on campus. The University’s last inauguration was that of Dr. David B. Burks in September 1987.

Delegates from more than 100 colleges and universities across the nation will represent their respective schools marching in the ceremony’s processional. More than 20 learned and professional societies will also be represented.

Ceremony speakers include Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, Searcy Mayor David Morris, Editor of “Arkansas Business” Gwen Moritz, President of Ohio Valley University Harold Shank, and Chancellor of University of Arkansas at Little Rock Joel Anderson

Speaking on behalf of University alumni will be Howard Wright, University distinguished alumnus. Dr. Michael Claxton, associate professor of English, will speak to represent University faculty and staff, and Searcy resident Tyler Gentry, president of the University Student Association, will speak on behalf of the student body.

The University’s combined choruses, which includes Belle Canto, Chorus, Concert Choir and the Harding Academy chorus, will perform songs honoring faith, work and family, and country.

Events this week include:

Sept. 17: Dr. Phillip Slate, a lecture presented by the College of Bible and Ministry, 7 p.m., Cone Chapel.
Sept. 19: “Evening with the Humanities,” presented by the College of Arts and Humanities, Reynolds Recital Hall, 7 p.m.
Sept. 20: Inauguration ceremony, Benson Auditorium, 2 p.m.
Reception immediately following from 3-5 p.m. in the American Heritage Cafeteria.
